Why PONDICHERRY is not a destination for Industries? Why there isnt any opportunity for me to work in my hometown?
The Situation
As a responsible youth of Pondicherry I wanted to draft this article so as to make an awareness in first place and hence open up on the long bothering question in my head - Why I cannot work in pondicherry, my hometown? Why do I have to go out of Pondy to set my career?. Before approaching the topic, I would like to post three main points.
1. Pondicherry doesn't have Industries catering to job opportunities
2. Bringing Industries to Pondicherry is the task of the Government
3. There is a proper consortium already present in Pondicherry Government to bring Industries into Pondicherry such as PIPDIC, Guidance Bureau, Single Window, what not? Department of Commerce and Industries.
So, What do we have?
Pondicherry - as we bluntly understand is a tourism economy, it is not so. We cannot conclude Pondicherry's economy to be Tourism based without even trying to explore or understand what it takes for a 100 Crore - Investing company generating approx 500 Job opportunities to come and invest into pondicherry despite having soo many advantages. I strongly believe it is the mis-informed youth who have failed to question or even think about it. Example., Stereotyping - Industries are not just IT companies.
I do not know how many youth are aware of what is required or the procedure for any company to come and set up their stalls in a city/Place. Let me put it in five simple points down here,
1. Any Governmental consortium will have a Industries Department which will handhold the Industries establishments end-to-end. Pondicherry doesnt have one??? IT DOES! it also has PIPDIC - PONDICHERRY INDUSTRIAL PROMOTION DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENT CORPORATION LIMITED ( A Government of Puducherry Undertaking )
2. So, for an Industrialist/ CEO to look upon Investing in an area, the Investment Climate of the state will influence the decision such as,
The Land availability in the State/City,
The Advantage of connect - Airport, Ports,
The Infrastructure and Definition of a clear-cut Industrial Policy,
Do you all think we dont have the above in our state?? We Do, YES!
Apart from the obvious, Pondicherry has the following advantages
1. The established Industrial Parks near chennai and the distance to reach the city in 2.30 mins, whereas an Investor can reach Pondicherry in the Same time
2. Pondicherry has comparatively less labour costs.
3. The Chennai Advantage.
4. Pondicherry is a City
5. Despite its size, it still has an domestic Airport. Cuddalore SIPCOT is still 40 mins from Pondicherry.
Having said all this, Please find the details of Number of Colleges in Pondicherry affliated under Pondicherry University ( One of the best in India)
What happens to the students who come out from the 95 colleges mentioned above? We have 19 Engineering colleges in Pondicherry, does the government cater employment? No!. We are not informed.
I would like to initiate questions with this brief write-up.
Why isnt the very few Industrial parks having empty spaces? Is it very hard to sell spaces to industries?? We have the following Industrial Parks in Pondicherry,
- Mettupalayam Industrial Estate, Puducherry (167) acres.
- Sedarapet Industrial Estate, Puducherry (62 acres).
- Kirumambakkam Industrial Estate, Puducherry (23 acres).
- Thirubuvanai Industrial Estate, Puducherry (52 acres).
- Industrial Growth Centre, Polagam, Karaikal (597 acres).
- IT Park, Pillaichavady, Puducherry (3.16 acres).
Has all these been filled up?
Why isnt any marketing being done effectively? We do not have a competent and efficient set of Team?
Why isnt Employment generated for the thousands of Students who are coming out every year??

COVID has made us understand many things. Any student who is coming out of Pondicherry, the first place he/she would land is Chennai. Chennai is very well nourished by Industries and it is one of the populous cities in Tamil Nadu. It would not be exaggerating if I said, almost 85 % of students who pass out of college every year in Pondicherry would intend to come to Chennai for Career opportunity.
Pondicherry having such a strong defined Government construct, demanding State recognition, Isnt it basic to improve the investment Climate and hence create a Industries cluster and hence JOB Opportunities??
Why it hasnt happened yet? I wonder.

All said and done the govt should give congenial atmosphere for starting up and also run it with out hindrances . The Labour front should not be falling a prey to the political hands and be influenced by them.
